Classic 25+5 Pomodoro Timer

Tomato and stopwatch illustration for a classic Pomodoro timer

A classic Pomodoro timer is a short focus cycle: 25 minutes of work, then a 5-minute break. The idea is simple. You pick one task, work until the gong, then step away before starting again.

That rhythm helps when a long stretch of work feels vague. A 25-minute block is long enough to get into something, and short enough that starting does not feel heavy. The break is built in, so you do not have to negotiate with yourself about when to stop.

What you get

  • Focus — 25 minutes
  • Break — 5 minutes

Short messages appear for each phase. A gong marks the end of the focus block and the end of the break. When the cycle finishes, you can start the next round immediately.

Why a bigger screen helps

Most people run Pomodoro on a phone. That puts a distraction machine next to the work, and it turns the timer into something you keep checking instead of something that sits in the background.

On a monitor, tablet, or laptop, the countdown can stay visible without asking for attention. You glance up when you need to, then get back to the task. The focus block feels cleaner because the clock is easy to see and your phone is not competing for it.

How to run it

  1. Open the template on the screen you work with.
  2. Choose one task and start the focus block.
  3. Work until the gong, then take the full break.
  4. Start again when you are ready for the next round.

During the break, stand up, stretch, or look away from the screen. The template is there to protect both halves of the cycle, not just the work.

Make it your own

This classic 25+5 version is a clean starting point. Some people prefer shorter focus blocks. Others want a longer break after three or four rounds. You can change the timings, rewrite the messages, stack more cycles, or switch the look.

When you have a focus routine that fits your day, save it and reuse it. The point is not the perfect method. It is a timer you will actually start.

When the day is done, try the 10-minute sleep wind-down for a calmer end to the evening.
